Hostaway's website builder vs a custom booking site: how to choose (2026)
Hostaway's native builder is free and live in minutes. A custom site costs real money. Which one you need comes down to inventory size and whether the site is a brochure or a sales channel.
Use Hostaway's native website builder if you run a handful of listings, need a booking site live this week, and cannot fund maintenance. Build custom when your inventory is large enough that the site is a sales channel rather than a brochure, and when brand, booking flow, and back-office need to work the way you actually run them. Inventory size decides it.
That is the whole answer. The rest of this page is the evidence behind it.
What is Hostaway's website builder?
Hostaway is a property management system. Calendars, channel connections, reservations. Bundled with it is a direct booking website builder: a template-based site with Hostaway's booking engine behind it, wired to the same calendar your Airbnb and Booking.com listings run on.
Hostaway describes it as "tried and true templates to easily get your professional site set-up" and markets it as "Set up and start accepting direct bookings in 5 minutes" (Hostaway, Direct Booking Website Builder, retrieved 21 August 2026). The feature page adds "Customizable templates. Custom branding. Conversion-optimized designs built for vacation rentals... No code required" and "Real-time availability synced with Hostaway. Instant booking. Secure payments" (Hostaway, Direct Booking, retrieved 21 August 2026).
There are two tiers. The standard Booking Website, and Booking Website Pro.
What does the Hostaway website builder cost?
Hostaway's own numbers, all from the feature page above, retrieved 21 August 2026:
- Booking Website: "included at no extra cost with your Hostaway subscription."
- Booking Website Pro: "$49/month, plus a 0.5% reservation fee on bookings generated through Booking Website Pro."
- Guest-facing markup: "Hostaway also marks up and charges a 1.8% fee directly to guests (US only)."
- Payment processing: the campaign page states "There is a nominal, 3.9% payment processing fee."
Note the Hostaway subscription itself is quote-based. The pricing page opens with "How many listings do you manage?" and tiers by count: 2 to 14, 15 to 49, and 50+ (Hostaway pricing, retrieved 21 August 2026). Cost scales with inventory whichever route you take.
Why anyone builds a direct booking site in the first place
Both options exist for two reasons. The first is OTA commission. The second is the one operators actually say out loud when they call: they do not want to look like everyone else.
The commission case. Airbnb's help centre documents two fee structures. Under the split-fee model, "Most hosts pay a 3% service fee." Under the host-only model, "Most hosts pay 15.5%, remaining hosts typically pay 14%-16%, and hosts pay a 16% fee for listings in Brazil and Mexico" (Airbnb, Service fees, retrieved 21 August 2026).
Hostaway's own glossary puts the range plainly: "Direct bookings eliminate commission fees typically ranging from 3% to 15%, increasing net revenue per booking" (Hostaway glossary, Direct Booking Website, retrieved 21 August 2026).
Booking.com publishes no universal rate. Its partner documentation says the percentage depends on your country, property type, and the agreement you signed. Your number is in your accommodation agreement, and it is the one to use.
Commission is an argument for having a direct booking site at all. The native builder makes that argument as well as anything, in five minutes, for nothing. It is not an argument for building custom.
The brand case. Operators build custom because they want to own a brand, not rent a template. A Hostaway theme is recognisable as a Hostaway theme, the way a Squarespace site is recognisable as Squarespace. Every operator on it inherits the same photography grid, the same card layout, the same checkout, with their logo in the corner. Hireavilla's multi-destination marketplace and Manzil's Dubai apartments are different businesses; on the same builder they would look like the same business.
The guest notices, even if they could not say what they noticed. They have already seen the property on Airbnb, with Airbnb's layout and Airbnb's trust signals. They land on your site to check the price and find a thinner version of a page they have already left. Nothing on it says: this is the operator, this is the real thing, book here. So they go back.
That is why the two reasons are the same reason seen from opposite ends. Makarska Exklusiv had 110 curated luxury properties and a 4.95 average rating, and its site read like a generic OTA. The template flattened the brand, the flattened brand sent high-intent guests back to the OTA listing, and the OTA charged commission on demand the operator had created. Owning the brand is not a design preference. It is the mechanism by which the site earns the commission back.
So, the honest framing. Commission is the budget, and every direct booking site draws on it. Brand decides whether the site is a template that recaptures some of that budget, or the reason guests book with you in the first place. Everything below is about which of those you need.
Hostaway website builder vs custom booking site: the comparison
| Decision criterion | Hostaway native website builder | Custom-built booking site |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Hostaway advertises "Set up and start accepting direct bookings in 5 minutes." Realistically, as long as it takes to load photos and copy. | Twelve weeks, kickoff to launch, is the STYLABS standard. Makarska Exklusiv shipped in twelve weeks. |
| Cost | Included with a Hostaway subscription. Pro is $49/month plus a 0.5% reservation fee. Plus a 3.9% payment processing fee, plus a 1.8% guest-facing markup (US only). | A project fee, quoted after scoping. No per-booking take from your build partner. Hostaway subscription and payment processing still apply. |
| Custom domain | Supported. Hostaway's help centre documents connecting your own domain or subdomain via DNS records. | Yours. Your domain, your DNS, your hosting. |
| Design control | Template plus branding. Colours, logo, imagery, section choices, within what the builder exposes. | Whole design. Nothing is a shared theme. Four sites built, four different designs. |
| Booking flow control | Hostaway's booking engine: real-time availability, instant booking, secure payments. The flow is theirs. | Yours end to end. Makarska Exklusiv takes card, PayPal, or bank transfer, including a deposit split. |
| Own operator dashboard | No. Your back-office is Hostaway's UI. | Yes. Four sites, four dashboards. Listings, media, amenity groups, display order, reviews, and the things Hostaway does not model the way you run them. |
| SEO control | "Technical SEO built in: Fast, clean, search-friendly code," plus "AI-generated titles & meta descriptions" on Pro. You control what the builder exposes. | URL structure, page templates, schema, internal linking, and performance budget are all yours to set. |
| Multi-language | Not documented on Hostaway's builder pages. | Built in from the start where the audience needs it. STYLABS shipped a six-language content layer for Profound Properties. |
| Ongoing maintenance | Hostaway's problem. Hosting, updates, security, uptime, included. This is a genuine advantage. | Yours, or your build partner's. A real recurring line item, not a rounding error. |
| As inventory grows | The site keeps working. The template stays the template, and the back-office stays Hostaway's UI. Hostaway's pricing tiers by listing count. | Built for the portfolio you are heading toward. Hireavilla runs five destinations through one platform with an ERP and its own dashboard. |
Every Hostaway figure and quotation in the left column is sourced above. Every STYLABS figure in the right column is from delivered work, listed at /work/hostaway.
What about CraftedStays, Boostly, or WordPress?
The comparison above is two-way because the decision is. But there is a middle tier, and if you are searching for a Hostaway website builder alternative you will meet it first: subscription template platforms that connect to Hostaway and give you more than the native builder for less than a custom build.
| Hostaway Booking Website | CraftedStays | Boostly | Custom build | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Hostaway's own template builder | Template platform with live Hostaway sync | Done-for-you WordPress site, CRM, and coaching | A site and dashboard designed for one operator |
| Published price | Included; Pro is $49/month plus 0.5% per booking | $89.99/month for two properties, then $8/month per additional property. Custom pricing above 20 properties. | Not published. Priced on a call. | Project fee, quoted after scoping |
| Design | Template plus branding | Template plus branding, with paid custom builds from $4,500 | Their template system on WordPress | Yours |
| Operator dashboard | Hostaway's UI | Hostaway's UI | Hostaway's UI plus their CRM | Your own |
| Maintenance | Hostaway's | Theirs | Theirs, with weekly coaching calls | Yours or your partner's |
CraftedStays states there is "no setup fee, no booking commission" and offers a "14-day free trial" (CraftedStays pricing, retrieved 2 September 2026). Boostly's pitch is a guarantee rather than a price: "65% direct bookings in 12 months — or we work for free, refund you in full," with a custom WordPress site "live in 30 days" (Boostly pricing, retrieved 2 September 2026).
Both are credible answers for an operator between roughly 5 and 20 listings who has outgrown the native template but does not need a bespoke back-office. Both are still templates. CraftedStays' own pricing page moves operators above 20 properties onto a custom plan, and its custom builds start at $4,500, which is the platform conceding the same point this article makes: past a certain inventory, the template is the constraint. WordPress with a booking plugin sits in the same tier with more maintenance on your side.
If your problem is the front of house, one of these may be enough. If your problem is also the back-office, none of them touch it, because they all leave you in Hostaway's UI.
Where the native builder genuinely wins
Four things, and they are not small.
It is free and it is already there. No procurement, no vendor, no scoping call. If you are on Hostaway, you have it.
It is fast. Five minutes is Hostaway's own claim and it is a template builder, so it is plausible. Against twelve weeks, that is not a close race.
Nobody has to maintain it. Hosting, SSL, updates, security patches, uptime. All Hostaway's. A custom site moves every one of those onto your side of the ledger, permanently. Operators consistently underweight this.
Availability is already synced. The hardest part of a direct booking site is the calendar being right. The native builder gets that for free because it is the same system.
If you run six villas, your site converts the guests who reach it, and nobody on your team wants to own a codebase, stop reading. Use the builder. Spend the money on photography and paid search instead. This is the honest disqualifier and it applies to more operators than the custom-build sales pitch usually admits.
Where a custom site starts to pay for itself
A custom booking site is not a better version of the same thing. It is a different thing with different failure modes and a maintenance bill attached. It earns its cost in four situations.
Your brand is the product and the template flattens it. Makarska Exklusiv had 110 curated luxury properties, 100,000+ guests served, and a 4.95 average rating, and the site read like a generic OTA. When the digital product undersells the physical one, high-intent guests treat the OTA listing as the real one.
Guests find you, then finish somewhere else. The pattern is specific: the guest discovers the brand, browses, and completes the booking on Booking.com or Airbnb anyway. You paid to acquire that guest and then paid commission on them. This is the single clearest signal that the site is a cost centre pretending to be a sales channel.
The back-office does not fit. Amenity groups, display order, media, reviews, the operational details Hostaway does not model the way you run them. If your team keeps a spreadsheet open beside Hostaway, that spreadsheet is a specification for a dashboard nobody has built yet.

You are adding a destination. Hireavilla runs Goa, Alibaug, Mangalore, Bali, and Dubai as one marketplace with an ERP behind it. Multi-destination inventory is where a template stops stretching and the operations problem outgrows the website problem.
What "custom" actually means here
Hostaway does not go away. That is the part operators most often get wrong when they hear "custom site."
Hostaway stays the PMS and the system of record: calendars, channel connections, reservations. The custom layer sits on top. A guest site on your own domain reading availability and rates live from your Hostaway account, so the price shown is the price. An operator dashboard that is not Hostaway's UI. And the connection that keeps all three in sync.

There is no migration. Your team keeps working in the tool it already knows.
"The direct bookings speak for themselves. The platform genuinely elevated our guest experience, and guests arrive already knowing the calibre of stay we deliver."
Makarska Exklusiv Team, Founding Team, Makarska Exklusiv
STYLABS has built four such sites: Makarska Exklusiv (Croatia), Hireavilla (India, UAE, Indonesia), Manzil (Dubai), and Stayscape (Maharashtra). Four sites, four dashboards. None of them a shared theme. Each was built against the Hostaway account the operator already had.
How to decide in five minutes
Answer these honestly.
- How many listings? Under roughly 15, the native builder is almost certainly right. Above 50, the template is usually the constraint, not the solution. Between the two, the next four questions decide it.
- Is the site a cost centre or a sales channel? If nobody looks at its conversion rate, it is a cost centre, and a cost centre should be free.
- Where do your guests actually complete the booking? If the answer is an OTA, you are paying commission on demand you generated.
- Is there a spreadsheet running alongside Hostaway? That is your dashboard requirement, already written.
- Can you fund maintenance for three years? If not, do not build custom. An unmaintained custom site is worse than a maintained template.
Two or more yeses on questions 3, 4, and 5 point custom. Otherwise the builder is the right call, and choosing it is not settling.

FAQ
Is Hostaway's website builder any good? For its job, yes. It is included with a Hostaway subscription, Hostaway advertises setup in five minutes, and availability syncs live with your calendar. It is a template system, so the site will look like a template. For a handful of listings that already convert, that is a reasonable trade.
How much does Hostaway's website builder cost? Hostaway states the Booking Website is included at no extra cost with a Hostaway subscription. Booking Website Pro is an add-on at $49 per month plus a 0.5% reservation fee on bookings it generates. Hostaway also documents a 3.9% payment processing fee and a 1.8% fee charged directly to guests in the US.
What is the best alternative to Hostaway's website builder? It depends on inventory. Subscription platforms such as CraftedStays (from $89.99 a month) or Boostly connect to Hostaway and give a small portfolio a better template. A custom site built against your Hostaway account gives you your own design, booking flow, and operator dashboard, at project cost plus ongoing maintenance. Templates fix the front of house; only custom touches the back-office.
Can I use my own domain with Hostaway's website builder? Yes. Hostaway's help centre documents connecting your own domain or subdomain to the Booking Website by adding DNS records at your domain host. The domain stays yours. The site still runs on Hostaway's platform, so you own the address and Hostaway owns the template.
When is a custom Hostaway booking site worth it? When the site is a sales channel rather than a brochure. Two signals matter most: high-intent guests find your brand and still finish the booking on an OTA, and your team runs the parts Hostaway does not model in a spreadsheet beside it. Small inventory with a converting site does not need this.
Do I have to leave Hostaway to build a custom site? No. Hostaway stays the PMS and the system of record for calendars, channel connections, and reservations. A custom site reads availability and rates live from your Hostaway account. Your team keeps working in the tool it already knows. There is no migration and no replacement PMS involved.
How long does a custom Hostaway booking site take? The STYLABS standard engagement is twelve weeks from kickoff to launch. Makarska Exklusiv, which included brand, public site, a Hostaway-backed booking stack taking card, PayPal, or bank transfer, and a separate operator dashboard, shipped in twelve weeks. Hostaway's own builder advertises five minutes for a template site.
